History and Mission

THE MISSION OF HEALING PRIVATE WOUNDS

The Mission of Healing Private Wounds is to be an advocate for the health and welfare of all victims of sexual abuse.  We do this by providing faith inspired programs, services, funding and education that will promote health and wholeness to victims and their families.  We also provide Sexual Abuse Awareness and Prevention Education to stop sexual abuse from reaching our next generation.

HISTORY OF HEALING PRIVATE WOUNDS

Healing Private Wounds sprung from the large response from the book “The Whisper” which is a story of one women’s journey from being a victim of sexual abuse to becoming a “thriving survivor.”

At a book signing in 2006, the author of “The Whisper” Shirley Jo Petersen met another survivor Amy Fite and a deep lasting friendship began.  Each had the desire to begin a recovery group to help other victims of sexual abuse heal.  Three months later “Grow Group” put its roots down and we welcomed our first ten members.

Since that time Healing Private Wounds has developed many programs which include; Recovery Groups for women, men, and teens,  Recovery Workshops, Life Skill Book Studies, Jail Ministries, Sexual Abuse Facilitator Training Workshops, educational materials about sexual abuse and the healing process, Counseling Services, Mentor Programs, Internet Support Service, Sexual Abuse Prevention Education Talks to children, and Parents Support Group.

In January 2010 Healing Private Wounds became a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization.

Our dedicated executive board is the backbone of our organization and implements our programs.

Because we are an all volunteer organization we rely on our volunteers and donors to keep us going. We are always looking for more volunteers to help facilitate and promote our programs. You do not have to be a survivor to volunteer and be a part of our organization.

The need for our services continues to grow as more victims are coming out and telling their story.  Healing Private Wounds’ trained survivors facilitate the recovery groups, mentor and counsel. We are thankful to have many non victim supporting persons on our board and other volunteers who also counsel and assist us in our work.
